Cyber attack on U.S. government may have started earlier than initially thought – U.S. senator

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The unprecedented cyber attack on U.S. government firms reported this month may have started earlier than ultimate spring as beforehand believed, a U.S. senator involved in cybersecurity acknowledged on Wednesday.
U.S. investigators initially thought that the attack on government firms and private enterprise targets started in March or April, along with breaches of Treasury, State, Commerce and Energy Departments. State-backed Russian hackers have been acknowledged as a result of the suspects. Russia has denied involvement.
“The preliminary burrowing in may have started earlier,” Democratic Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, who serves as Vice-Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee knowledgeable Reuters in an interview.
