FCC asks Justice Department to weigh in on China Unicom U.S. operations

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requested the Justice Department and completely different U.S. corporations to aspect if China Unicom’s continued U.S operations pose nationwide security risks, in accordance to a letter launched Friday.
In April, the FCC issued show-cause orders warning it’d shut down the U.S. operations of three state-controlled Chinese telecommunications companies: China Telecom, China Unicom and Pacific Networks Corp and its subsidiary ComNet (USA). China Unicom Americas has an nearly two-decade outdated authorization to current worldwide telecommunications suppliers to and from the United States.
The FCC requested the chief division corporations “whether or not or not and the best way (China Unicom Americas) is matter to the exploitation, have an effect on, and administration of the Chinese authorities, and the nationwide security and laws enforcement risks associated.” It moreover requested “whether or not or not mitigation measures would possibly deal with any acknowledged points.”
